Married Beneath Him was Braddon's attempt at a modern society comedy. Cited as a source for George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, Braddon's heroine is a circus performer who marries a lord. Polly's husband, Lord Hunstanton, is embarrassed by the very qualities which attracted him to her in the first place, and tries to keep her circus family apart from his own aristocratic relations - with comic results.

Only a few copies of this play were published in 1882, and this edition includes Braddon's essay, 'Fifty Years of the Lyceum Theatre.'
