ONE FATAL MOMENT AND OTHER STORIES
AND
AT THE SHRINE OF JANE EYRE
By
Mary Elizabeth Braddon
Edited and With an Introduction by Jennifer Carnell

Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-1915) was one of the most popular and prolific authors of her generation, with a career which spanned six decades. Initially an actress, she became a successful novelist and magazine editor, and was renowned during her lifetime for her rise to fame as an equal of Wilkie Collins at the height of the controversy over sensation fiction in the 1860s. A number of her novels have now been reprinted, and her work is increasingly studied by students concentrating on Victorian and British literature. In addition her life and work are a growing area for graduate and academic research.

Although remembered primarily as the author of over eighty novels, Braddon also wrote dozens of short stories. The short stories in this volume represent the last collection published by Braddon in book form. The stories comprised the third volume of the first edition of All Along the River (1893), but when subsequent editions were published, the short stories were omitted. The stories vary in style and subject matter, and include four supernatural stories, while others deal with murder and guilt and resemble miniature sensation novels. The book concludes with an essay on Charlotte Brontë and Haworth which Braddon wrote for the Pall Mall Magazine in 1906.

Jennifer Carnell received her Ph.D for her research on Braddon and wrote The Literary Lives of Mary Elizabeth Braddon. She has edited editions of two novels by Braddon, The Black Band and The Octoroon, and is a contributor to the book Beyond Sensation (State University of New York Press). She is also the author of a biography of James Townsend Saward and a novel.
