DROSS; OR, THE ROOT OF EVIL
AND
MARJORIE DAW
BY
MARY ELIZABETH BRADDON
Edited by Jennifer Carnell
|
Fascinated by the theatre from an early age, and an actress for almost eight years, Braddon was keen to be a successful playwright. From the mid 1850s she pursued this aim with varying success; a number of anonymous farces were performed, and short runs of other plays appeared.
Dross; Or, The Root of Evil is a three act comedy about the dangers of sudden wealth. Although light-hearted, it humorously echoes some of the conventions of sensation fiction, with a concealed will, displaced heir, and villainous groom. Marjorie Daw is reminiscent of the one act farces Braddon appeared in as a young actress, and is based on a story by the American author Thomas Bailey Aldrich.
