Collins & Peale
Daguerreotype, 1856

This is an American daguerreotype of a young girl called Mary, and it was taken in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1856. As well as being a lovely picture, Mary later wrote a message behind the picture identifying herself and the photographer:

'This was taken for mother, father, sisters & Gem when I was in Springfield Nov 16 1856 by Collins & Peale.
When this you see
Please to think of me
Mary Putnam' (the surname is rubbed and could be Pittman).
