THE CORN EXCHANGE, LEWES
During her stage career as an actress under the name of Mary Seyton, Mary Elizabeth Braddon acted for four nights at the Corn Exchange in Lewes (2 nights in 1858 and 2 nights in 1859).
Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and is a few miles from Brighton where Braddon was employed by Henry Nye Chart at the Theatre Royal.
The Brighton company went to Lewes by omnibus and played to a large audience in such plays as Slasher and Crasher and Still Waters Run Deep (by Tom Taylor).
Today the Corn Exchange forms part of the Town Hall buildings.
