Captain Charles Horton Rhys (1824-1876)

Portrait of Captain Horton Rhys
One of the most well known of the 'gentleman amateur' actors of the 1850s and 1860s, Rhys was a guest performer with the Henry Nye Chart company at the Theatre Royal, Brighton in 1859 while Braddon was there. Accompanying Rhys as 'amateur guests' were Catharine Lucette, Mr. H. Hilton, and Mr. Raigh. Miss Catharine (sometimes spelt Catherine on playbills) Lucette went on to accompany Rhys on his tour to America and Canada. When Rhys became a professional actor he changed his name to Captain Morton Price.
I am currently researching Rhys and his 1861 book A Theatrical Trip For A Wager, and would be pleased to hear from anyone with information, photographs, pictures etc. jennifercarnell@sensationpress.com
The front cover of A Theatrical Trip For A Wager! Through Canada and
the United States, published for the author by Charles Dudley in 1861.
Captain Morton Price was the stage name Rhys adopted for the wager, and he
continued to use it on his return.
